Project: Death At A Funeral
Role: Visual Designer
Tools: Photoshop
Objective: Design a One Sheet and Teaser poster for the film Death At A Funeral, capturing the dark comedy tone of the movie.
The Challenge
The primary challenge is to visually reconcile two opposing themes, the solemnity of a funeral and the chaotic absurdity of a dark comedy. The design must communicate "death" without being purely morbid, and "comedy" without appearing tacky. It requires a balance that piques curiosity while respecting the film’s specific tone.
The Identity
The visual identity centers on "refined chaos." By utilizing bold, experimental typography and a high-contrast color palette, the identity reflects the unraveling of a formal event. The aesthetic relies on sharp, high-quality visual assets and professional-grade compositing to ensure the dark humor feels intentional and cinematic.
The Strategy
To capture the dark comedy tone, the strategy involves using juxtaposition. This means placing traditional funeral iconography (like flowers, coffins and formal attire) in unconventional contexts. By focusing on lighting, depth, and realistic shadow work in Photoshop, the posters will create a grounded environment where the bizarre elements of the plot feel strikingly out of place.
The Application
The Teaser Poster:
A minimalist, design intended to spark intrigue by focusing on a single, symbolic image that hints at the brewing disaster.
The One Sheet:
A comprehensive layout that establishes the atmosphere, introduces the ensemble feel, and provides the necessary billing and title treatments.
The Outcome
The result is a cohesive set of promotional materials that successfully translate the film's narrative tension into a static visual medium. Through meticulous digital refinement and thoughtful composition, the posters serve as a professional bridge between the audience's expectations of a "funeral" and the reality of the film's dark, comedic heart.
